In the last year we have seen a huge increase of solar, wind and hydrogen farms being developed – or planned for development, right across Australia.
But the White Rock solar farm is different. In fact it is only one of two wind-solar hybrid facilities in Australia’s National Electricity Market.
18 kms west of Glen Innes in NSW, this 20MW solar farm has begun producing electricity to the main grid. It’s working alongside the already completed 175MW White Rock Wind farm.
This is the second, but largest wind-solar hybrid facility. Last year the first wind-solar hybrid facility opened near Goulburn. The Gullen Range Solar and wind farm consisted of a 10 MW solar farm and 165 MW wind farm facility.
While there are currently only two active hybrid facilities in Australia, we will see numerous hybrid combinations in the future. Why? Because they not only result in cost saving for grid connections and other equipment, but they also often produce complementary output – with wind often still producing energy once the sun has set.
It’s only a matter of time before we see more of these hybrid farms connected into the grid – then we just need to add battery.
