The Bungala Solar Farm is currently the nation’s largest operation solar PV plant.

Commissioned in stages, it’s exciting to see that the Bungala Solar Farm near Port Augusta in South Australia is now fully operational. The second phase of the project started feeding energy into the grid last week. This makes the solar power plant the nation’s largest operating solar farm.

There are two plants at the site, which cover 600 hectares of land. Made up of 800,000 solar panels, the project operates at a capacity of 220 MW.

That has the potential to power more than 95,000 homes!

In fact, all of the power being generated at the Bungala site will power the homes of Origin Energy customers. This is off the back of a long-term power purchase agreement that Origin has with site owner Enel Green Power. The launch of this site is going to be a significant step forward towards Origin’s goal to source 25% of energy for its customers from renewables by 2020.

But the Bungala project shouldn’t get too comfortable in its position as the largest complete solar power plant in Australia. It will soon be overtaken by some other big projects in the development pipeline.

Limondale solar farm which is a 349 MWp and the 255MWp Sunraysia Solar farm in NSW. And the Kiamal Solar farm which is a 256.5 MWp solar farm in Victoria are next on the completion list.
